It's October

Family!

Wow, time is legitimately flying by right now! I just can't believe that in just a short couple of days it's OCTOBER! Before I start out on my letter though....HAPPY BIRTHDAY TAN-MAN! Love you and miss you. I hope you had/are having the best birthday yet in Georgia of all places! :)

So this week:

TUESDAY:District meeting, new investigator, and taking Sister Leavitt around to say good-bye to alot of the members.
WEDNESDAY: Sister Leavitt left me, but Sister Romney made it here safe. We spent most of the day inside, visioning and getting to know each other better.
THURSDAY: Weekly Planning days. We met the Elders for lunch, set a goal of 10 baptisms in our branch this week, walked 40 minutes to raid an old mission apartment for bikes and food, then planned like mad the rest of the day.
FRIDAY:
2 lessons, one new investigator. Such a busy day it seemed like. Also the day I biffed it hard core.
SATURDAY:
The day spent at the KDC. We had a branch primary activity that we got to help out with. It was a blast, a treasure hunt, airplane constructing, bowling pin painting activity. I love my branch so much. I just can't say that enough. I absolute love them! Afterwards we got to meet with a referral from my branch president and was able to get another new investigator. She is so prepared and so sweet. Afterwards my Elders had a baptism.

FUNNY STORIES:
The Airport Mishap: This is actually from 2 weeks ago on the way to zone conference, but I am horrible at sending out large e-mails soo....Anyways I get so flustered every time I fly due to immigration and not being in missionary clothes and not getting to wear my tag...it's just so stressful. So immediately after we get our baggage we go straight to the bathroom to put on our proselyting clothes and tag. While I was in the restroom I put down my passport and the phone in the stall. We leave the bathroom meet up with all the missionaries outside of the airport. I went to go check my phone to call my R.C. I went to visit and I could not find it anywhere! I was terrified. I turn to Sister Leavitt and manage to spit out that I can't find my passport or our hand-phone, I said that I must have left it on the other side of security in the restroom. We both look at each other and make a run for it. We kick our shoes off and our name tags obviously and try to make a break for it through the security doors. We made it about two steps when the alarm goes off  through the whole airport! we get caught and are escorted to the information desk. They blasted my name through the entire airport, I was mortified, all the missionaries heard. No passport was found. I go back sit by my luggage and all the sudden I hear the phone ringing. IT WAS IN MY BAG THE WHOLE TIME! I AM SUCH AN AIRHEAD!  I felt so silly, but I set the alarms off in Singapore so that was pretty cool.
That One Time I got a Rock Stuck in my Arm:
This is a real quick story. On our way to a potential appointment, we saw the person we were going to meet driving...in the opposite direction of our appointment....determined to not let him get away I started screaming, "BRYAN, BRYAN, HI, HI, HI, HI," all while obnoxiously waving. That was when I learned in order to properly break you need to use both hands to stop both tires. My back tire flew over the front end of the bike and I catapulted into the sky. Haha I blacked out for about two seconds, enough time for blood to gush all over my white shirt, I was ticked. Luckily we were in front of the chapel, unluckily it was new missionary training and the mission president and his wife was there. I am all good now, just bruised up a bit, but I should get a pretty gnarly scar on my elbow. :)
WEIRD FOOD:
Sting Ray-so exotic. It didn't taste like how I imagined, it was just so normal, but still I can say I ate sting ray now! :)
Lamb-Ok, not that weird, but I just felt so guilty every time I ate a piece.
MIRACLE:
Saturday my amazing Elders had a baptism for one of their investigators, which in itself is a miracle, but even better than that Sister Romney and I had 5 investigators come to witness the baptism. We only teach 7 people, so I was legitimately shocked when they all came! Not only did they come, but they were there because members invited them, not us. We were so behind the ball this last week due to transfers, but our members really pulled through for us! 5 investigators, ahhh so cool. It's going to be a white christmas here in Kuching, We are going to be filling that font everyday.
We also got 3 new investigators this week. We are just being so so blessed!

DO THIS:
So I started a prayer journal this week after realizing my testimony about prayer is not the strongest...which is just not ok as a missionary. It's Phenomenal. In the morning I study for about 5 minutes about prayer, why we pray, and so on. Then I write down what I am praying for. At night I write down how that prayer was answered that day. Obviously I don't pray for anything crazy, but I do pray for things that are slightly out of my complete control. Every night I have notice my prayers were completely answered that day. Since I've started it, when I testify about prayer in lessons I speak with a lot more conviction, but in addition to that I just feel so much closer to my Heavenly Father which brings a multiplicity of blessings along with it. I would challenge all of you to start a prayer journal.

Sorry. This letter was rushed, especially writing about the individual days. This transfer is starting off right and I am so excited to be a part of the miracles here is Kuching for another transfer. Getting a new companion is always an adjustment, especially since I loved Sister Leavitt so so much. However I know that my new companionship with Sister Romney is very inspired. We are going to kill it these next 6 weeks!

Things are good, I'm loving life.
I never want to leave East Malaysia.

This week. Ayo.

Monday: This Monday will go down in history as the most boring P-day in the history of the Singapore Mission. Haha it was not my favorite, we spent the day at the KDC talking with a couple of the Elders who weren't playing the "elders only basketball game." Once we had decided to go home and catch up on sleep in perfect Malaysia fashion it began to down pour and we were stuck! It really wasn't that bad, we were able to get to know a couple of the Elders better, but I am determined to not do that again.
Tuesday: District Meeting Days are always the best days. After another great meeting we took our new Cina elders out to meet a Less active who only speaks Cina or Malay. No English. She is the best though, I absolutely adore her, and I want her to come back so badly. She said that the reason she does not attend church anymore is because she has no friends. Heart-breaking. Anyways we took the elders to go and see her and learned that she doesn't speak Mandarin at all she speaks a different dialect called Hakkien. The elders tried so hard to teach her and to help her understand but could not. We could tell she was really sad and frustrated that she was unable to understand so we took her to Ice Cream! Once again in perfect Malaysia fashion it down poured again, so while we were in the ice cream shop we took the opportunity to teach her some English and do some major BTR (build trust relationship.) It was a lot of time, but I think...I know that it was well spent. After we met with our less-active we headed to the Mall to meet a potential that I had contacted a few weeks previous. It started out so so well, we met up we walked to a delicious Indian restaurant, we were eating DELICIOUS food, and then he say the three words no missionary ever wants to hear....I AM MUSLIM. I was so mad! Haha I wanted to flip the table. Luckily he never accepted our invitation to come to church or we would've been in big trouble. Anyways we kept our cool, pretended it didn't matter and promptly walked back with him and parted ways. The laws here are so frustrating. I can't wait to teach all the Muslim people I've met here in the Spirit World!
Wednesday: This day every single lesson/appointment we set up fell through and we felt depressed so we decided to go contacting to lift our spirits, then in perfect Malaysia fashion it down-poured and we were stranded at a mall until we had to go in for the night. We were able to get some numbers and I finally caved in and used one of those completely unsanitary massage chairs they have in malls. It was worth the Ringgit.
Thursday: Ahhh Weekly Planning, I love Thursdays. I always get so much scripture study in it is insane. That's all I need to make me happy is a set of hi-lighters, my quad, and the scripture study manuals. Complete Bliss right there. After Planning though we met with a family of potential that we wanted the Cina elders to meet.  We weren't able to travel together, but we assumed they could make it. Haha we were wrong. About 10 minutes after our appointment is supposed to begin we call the Elders and poor greenie, Elder Pierce, got separated from Elder Fletcher and they were lost, it was raining (in perfect Malaysia fashion), it was dark, and obviously only one of them had a phone and it wasn't greenie. Haha I really shouldn't have laughed as much as I did at the situation, I would have been freaking out, but all was well and after 1 hour, 1 very long hour, Elder Pierce was able to get to the church and call Elder Fletcher. The appointment got kacaud but a miracle came from it I will tell you later!
Friday: We got a new investigator and biked all the way to Matang! (1 hour bike ride away, which seems to be uphill...both ways...)
Saturday: Contacting all day, in which I realized the happiest missionary is a finding missionary. I love getting to meet new people.
Sunday: Church. I love my members but they love to pick on the sisters. Haha I need to get a branch photo, we are all kind of misfits, but in the best possible way!
BONUS Monday: Today we went to bako, which is the miracle that came from the Elders missing the appointment! We had told them that we planned on going to Bako and they not only wanted to come with us but even picked us up and drove us there. Today was a blast, I look like a lobster, and my entire body is bruised from one to many dives  in our intense capture the flag game on the beach but it was such a good p-day and I am so happy I got to spend it with all the missionaries I love and the coolest potential investigators!

Sorry for the quick run down of Friday-Bonus Monday. E-mailing time is running out quicker than I can type!

Funny Story:
All of what I am about to say is 100% true. Today at Bako I literally got attacked by a herd of monkeys. Haha. Bako is basically a jungle trek and as we were just walking to the trails a family of monkeys come up to us, and it was so nice and pleasant, and then they got this evil look in their eyes. We were completely surrounding and there was no one to save us. We had started to walk away slowly in hopes that they wouldn't pursue us, but they must have seen the fear in my eyes because as we get past a couple of them, one of them literally jumped on to my backpack making crazy monkey noises and stole my water! I couldn't stop screaming! Haha I felt like such a girl, but it was something that I thought I would never have to worry about. We passed like 20 more monkeys the rest of the day and I couldn't look them in the eye. It was terrifying. Haha I think I was more upset about him stealing my water though.

I can now safely say that I've been attacked by monkeys though.

This week had quite a few ups and downs, it's so evident that rainy season is upon us, but WOW I love this work, I am obsessed with being a missionary, and I feel so much love for the people here. For all the fun stories that happened this week there were 3X more amazing lessons, people changed, and happiness felt. Next week I will try my hardest to write all of them down. I am so grateful to be here, the church is true, i learn it everyday!

Love all of you!

August 17 2014

This work is so amazing! Dad, you were right it was transfers last week, and I am still in Kuching! I am so so excited for this transfer.

Last week was so crazy! Transfer news came in on Monday and everything after that seems like such a blur! Sister Leavitt and I are still together but Elder Chong and Elder Mitchell left. We were heart-broken. They have moved on to bigger better things, Elder Chong finished his mission and Elder Mitchell is now a Zone Leader in Johor Bahru (almighty ZL Mitchell..) The first 3 days of the weeks were spent going to as many members as we could with the Elders to say good-bye and prepare them for the new elders coming in, Fletcher and Greenie (Pierce). It was so good to be able to see the love the elders had for their area, investigators, and members! We still miss them a lot and reminisce on all "the good times" but we are already tight with the new ones! The following 3 days were planning, visioning, planning, and more planning.

We are going to blow the members minds this transfer about the Atonement. I have been struggling in this area the past 3 months with trying to find ways to excite the members into missionary work. That was where I went wrong. Yes, they are exhausted of trying and seeing no results. Yes, they are converted to the gospel. But, THEY HAVE NO HOPE! I don't know about you but the only sure thing that gives me hope no matter what is the Atonement of Jesus Christ. They don't need to be excited into missionary work, they need to be loved into missionary work. This lesson has been so great for me to be able to prepare, to grow my testimony of the Atonement and to see my desire to share the gospel increase in just 2 weeks. I will keep you updated on how it all goes, the first official lesson is tonight!

This e-mail is short and boring, and I'm sorry I can't send you photos, i forgot the camera chord......

The Atonement is real and this church is so amazing.

I can't believe I hit my official 9 months on Wednesday! This mission is going by insanely fast.

I promise to have at least a couple funny stories for you next week and LOTS of photos!

August 3rd 2014

So let me tell you about my P-day! Haha
It was Hari Raya, a gigantic Muslim holiday, and we went from Melayu house to Melayu house eating chicken curry, glutinous rice, and rendang...all...day....
So at the end of the day after about 4-5 house of eating the exact same thing we met up with one of our less-actives who took us to a Muslim Kampung and it was such an adventure.
-back story so we can not talk to Muslims about anything relating to religion, and there is animosity between Christians and the Muslims and this is the only day of year that we could go into the kampung let a lone their actual houses, such a neat experience.
When we got to the kampung that had just had a black out and so everyone was in their dark house feasting by candle light and the air-cons are out and it is just sweltering. We walk up to our first house and talk for a little bit and then they make us eat food, and the hosts don't eat, they just serve the guests and watch them eat...so uncomfortable haha....keep in mind it is pitch black so i just go and i get a spoonful of each thing, thinking it was safe, all the houses so far had the same food so this one wouldn't be different right? WRONG! As I am chewing on my first bite of what I assume to be rendang(beef) I thought to myself, wow the texture is funny, the taste is funny, this isn't quite right. Immediately as I am thinking this the host says, "oh, how is the HORSE?" I ATE HORSE, BISCUIT WAS EATEN, PEGASUS IS DEAD, BLACK BEAUTY WAS DEVOURED. I hated myself. The worst part was the fact that the host was a horse jockey. Hahah I can't believe my life.
Anyways so after the horse meat fiasco, we went to travel to the next house and we were swarmed by the kids living in the village because the wanted to see the Orang Putay (white people) and we legitimately ran around the kampung in the dark laughing and joking and playing with sparklers. It was an experience I will never forget, it was so fun, and legitimately once in a lifetime for me. I can't wait for the chance to teach Muslims in Malaysia one day when the law is lifted.
I am out of time I am so sorry I can't include anything spiritual but I will next week, I promise!
Love all of you!
Be missionaries! I am going to follow-up!

July 27 2014

"For me, the reading of the scriptures is not the pursuit of scholarship. Rather, it is love affair with the word of the Lord and that of his prophets." President Hinckley 1985

This week was a BLUR. If it was not for my planner I would have no clue what happened.

Highlights of the week:
-Member present lesson, where the member followed the spirit to the location of the lesson, because he had no clue how to get there and doesn't own a cell phone. It was insane.
-Making Pinatas, because we all know I love doing pinata lessons
-Getting a new investigator!!!!
-reconnecting with a former investigator at the art museum! (She's so ready now...)
-Drop by lessons and free Chinese noodles. Yum.
-Our first ever English class!
-The best part, going and volunteering at the Handicap center, it is always the highlight of my week, I love going and seeing them and their zeal for life despite their very real challenges!
-Ramadan is over and Raya has begun. (The Malay..aka Muslims...are done with their fast and happiness is restored to Kuching!)

This week was good, missionary life is finally completely natural to me and I hope I never loose sight of that. I have been so reflective this past week with missionaries going home and transfers coming up....again. I am finally cultivating the deep love for the gospel that I have always wanted and admired in others. I love the scriptures, I am obsessed with the scriptures, I finally have a love affair with the scriptures. As I was reading the BOM this morning I couldn't help but be overwhelmed by the trials and pains that the prophets went through so that I, ME, SISTER HANSEN, could have them now, for my trials, which are so small in comparison. I made a goal last week to finish the BOM by the end of July, I am currently only in Alma 45, but as I have been spending all my "free" time reading the word of God, I can't even explain the joy and peace it has brought to me. The work has been slow for me the past 2 months here in Kuching. I would lie if I said I hadn't gotten discouraged, but reading about Ammon, or Abinadai, or Moroni, or Alma the Younger, the spiritual heroes, the amazing missionaries, I have found that the promises to them and their labors are true of me and my labors as well. I have only a short time left here in the vineyard, and I am stoked to finish it strong.
I am going super sister missionary on all of you now. Please, from the bottom of my heart, do missionary work, share the gospel, pray for opportunities, and then seize them. I have never been so happy in my entire life. So many of the problems we face now would be non-existent if we just turn outwards and serve others.

I don't have any funny stories or weird food that has been eaten this week, but I do have a renewed desire to try my hardest and to do my best as the Lord's servant. I LOVE THIS WORK.

The Many Colors of Sister Hansen ....Literally

Before I start telling you about my week, let me tell you about my current obsession on the mission...I LOVE STUDYING THE GOSPEL! Ahhh I am sad I never felt as though I needed to learn more and more about the gospel till now. Currently I am reading the Infinite Atonemtent, Jesus the Christ, Church History in the Fullness of Times, and Daughters in my Kingdom, in conjunction with the BOM and O.T. of course! I am literally obsessed. I now get ready in 10 minutes to have 50 extra minutes to read in the morning and get ready for bed super quick to have another additional 60 minutes before I sleep. There is just so much to learn and hardly anytime to learn it. Currently I am really loving Leviticus and the Old Testament institute manual. I have to share this killer quote with all of you! "Man's duty to God is not the fiving up of on faculty, but the entire surrender of all. So Christ Sums up the first commandment-all the mind, all the soul, all the affections. 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.' Refers so particularly of the parts of the burnt-offering...The head is the well-known emblem of the thoughts; the legs, the emblem of the walk; and the inwards, the constant and familiar symbol of the feelings and affections of the heart. The fat represents the energy of not one limb or faculty, but the health and vigor of the whole. In Jesus these were all surrendered and all without spot or blemish. Had there been but one thought in the mind of Jesus which was not completely given to God. Had there been but one affection in the heart of Jesus which was not yeilded to his father's will. Had there been but one step in the walk of Jesus which was not taken for God, but for his own pleasure; then he could NOT have offered himself. But Jesus gave up all. HE RESERVED NOTHING. All was burnt.  All was consumed upon the altar." -Jukes SO GOOD!
So basically this week was stellar. Every moment we killed it!
Miracle of the Week:
Let me tell you a story. So this week we were super optimistic about our 2 on date, until Tuesday. One of them moved to Penang and the other dropped off the face of the Earth, she can't meet for a month of two...That's not the miracle though. We received a referral on Sunday from the senior couple here so feeling completely defeated we grudgingly called up the potential Peggy, and she wanted to meet with us that day! It was insane, we taught her the restoration and she became a new investigator. After the lesson we find out that she has heard all the missionary discussions before due to helping translate for her friend. Also her English is impeccable, which is a gem here in Sarawak! The next day She calls us and wants to take us to lunch but we were quite busy so we rescheduled for Saturday, all I can say is she is literally perfect. Such a kingdom builder. She read about the W.O.W. and Tithing, and she actually likes them. In fact she bought us fruit, because the Word of Wisdom says to eat lots of fruits and vegetables. So all in all after the horrible news we received earlier in the week we were blessed with such a killer miracle!
Weird Eats:
Durian. gross. all I can say is gross. It tastes like rotted onions and trash. "The King of Fruits."
Mangosteen. "The Queen of Fruits." So yum. It is delicious and will probably be eaten on the daily.
Pig Intestine Soup: Actually called Bu Ka Te. Little did we know that it was pig intestines until we were eating it and talking about how good it was. Gross.
Funny Story:
So every Sunday night we go to President Teo's house for dinner, and the conversation is always hilarious but this week it was especially uncomfortable and funny. So one of the Elder's I work with is Elder Mitchell and the poor guy is the target of all the jokes. Often referred to as Sister Mitchell (after pretending to be a relief society president) was body slammed all night. Hahah so we got on the topic of Adam and Eve and how the woman was created from Man, but they need each other. Then President Teo said, "Elder Mitchell/Sister Mitchell you are perfect because you are a boy and a girl. You don't need any one else." Haha Sister Leavitt and I are dying at this point. Teo continues and says, "what is that called again? A....Hermaphrodite...."It was horrible and uncomfortable, but it was hilarious! Poor Elder Mitchell. He only gets teased so much because he can take it.
Title Story:
As you will see from the photos this week my skin got wrecked! Splits was this week, and due to a lack of bikes, we had to go a day with out bikes. Naturally the day we went without we ended up having to walk 3-4 hours in the sun to our appointments. I came out of that day looking like a lobster. Then the next day we biked to Matang, (about 1 hour one way), and my arms now look like a stripped easter egg. It's terrible but we are doing work, so I can handle a horrible farmers tan or two!

In other news I have hit my official 8 months. I am shocked. The fact that on the 23rd of this month I will only have 9 months left is even more of a shocker. Ayyyy missions. Such a crazy fun unique experience especially in the jungles of East Malaysia!

Love you!
Sister Emma Lynne Hansen

also can you believe those dogs I sent you a photo of? So gross. There are no normal dogs here, only zombie dogs!

"If your bike breaks a miracle is coming

Wow! This week.
I don't even know what has happened, it was such a whirlwind!
Monday:
For preparation day on Monday we decided to hit water front by the ZL's request that we have a day with the zone. Haha we trek up there only to get caught in a massive rainstorm. That was ok it was just a lot of jalan-jalaning in the mall there. On the way back though we got our p-day adventure when Sister Leavitt's bike got a killer flat and we spent the night in the apartment trying to take the tire off and find the leak. (We had to laugh because in the previous week we had to go to the bike shop to repair her bike and gravity had gotten the better of me almost everyday. Elder Scott had noticed a pattern and told us if your bike breaks you are going to get a miracle.)
Tuesday:
This was such a killer day! We did work. After district meeting and taking Sister Leavitt's bike in for a new inner-tube we booked it to go see our investigator Shana and had a lesson taught about tithing, it wasn't an amazing lesson, but we realized really quickly her comprehension of what we were teaching, and it was small. She wants it though, so bad. After her lesson we litterally had 2 minutes to race to our next lesson with Jessie a newer investigator that sends slightly weird sms's and taught her the restoration, no matter how many times I teach the story of Joseph Smith I love it more and more each time. After her lesson we went to a handicap facility that Sister Hales and I had been to a couple times previous to see if there was weekly service we could give there. I am so glad we checked! We can go any day we want between 2 and 5 and visit with those who stay there. It's such a simple thing to do but it was such a blast! I loved every minute of it! Then it was dinner time and we were able to go and visit our investigator who owns a burger stand to give him a reading chart and to contact in the vicinity. It was a blast.
Wednesday and Thursday:
I will give you the highlights because I am realizing time is winding down! Haha! WE FINALLY GOT SHANA TO THE KDC! She is unable to have sundays off which means she cannot be baptized, so we wanted her to come the the chapel and to feel the special spirit there. I am 100% positive it worked and her desire to come to church is growing. So grateful for members with cars. We also got to visit a LA who is my age with a couple of the youth/ysa from the branch and it was such a fun lesson. We "pretended" to teach them the Restoration and got in some major BTR.
Friday:
We had a lesson with our investigator that owns the burger shack and it was 2 hours long, and one of the hardest lessons I've had on my mission. We may have accidentally dropped him. By accidentally though I mean we weren't planning on doing it, but the spirit was! It was ok, but I am pretty heart broken about it!
Saturday:
My branch is AMAZING. so to start off the day we went to the senior couples home to make cream puffs for branch bowling that night, it was a blast and I absolutely adore my elders and the senior couple. Then we went to bowling and the members had brought 10 non-members with them. We were able to bowl, have fun, and get some major missionary work in! It was great and I am so stoked to call all the referrals we were given!

Sorry this was rushed towards the end, but I am running out of time! I love you all so much and I love this work!

Building and Burning Bridges

It is a new transfer out here in the field, I can't believe it, I feel like they are speeding up. I am staying in Kuching branch and i am stoked. I think I am going to be distraught when I have to leave these people and my bike.
I realize I haven' sent a big e-mail around for 2 weeks, Sorry... So on to the highlights! First is the Gawai party which I may have already told you about, but I was obsessed with! To enter said party all the missionaries had to line up outside and take shots of zapple to get in, which is highly inappropriate, but as they say, "Malaysia Boleh." The party was packed full of food and Iban dancing, I couldn't understand anything anyone said but i could feel the love the all had for each other and the love heavenly father has for them. Another fond memory was hiking Bako, where Sister Hansen hit the jungle a little too hard and got dehydration but made it out alive and got to see some amazing scenes and monkeys along the wa. The last is Zone Conference! AHH, so amazing the leaders here are out of this world, so amazing and it came at the perfect time. The main message they focused on was Repentance and changing NOW! We are all often too casual about it all and I know I needed that push towards developing and progressing now.
Now that you have the all the catch up information I can tell you all about the amazing things and not so amazing things that happened this week.
So on Tuesday after district meeting our appointment got cancelled and we decided to take that opportunity to get Sister Hales a bike box for moving to her new area. No big deal right? We thought it would only take like 15 minutes tops...WE WERE SO WRONG. let me put in a little disclaimer: I am a horrible trainer. Anyways so we get the bike box and realize how HUGE it is and we both said, "wow that's pretty big, we probably shouldn't bike it home." Then I went real irresponsible and decided I could carry the box (that was larger than my bike) and ride it to our apartment 10 minutes away. So I pick up the box and start out, I make it 10 feet then crash. Nothing too bad mostly embarrassing. This sweet, kind of nosy, malay man comes up to us and tells us not to ride the bike box home that we need to break the box down and get a ride. We listened to him and walked around the corner until he couldn't see us anymore and devised a way for me to take the box from sister hales while I was riding, you know use the momentum. Well, I got the box, I got it good, however I grabbed the box on the side of the brakes. Bad news bears. I got pretty far, I was really proud. I was so close then I just had to turn around. Worst mistake of my life. When I turned around the box got stuck in the back wheel and sister hansen took flight for a good minute. Haha. the back tire fell off, I destroyed my wrist and Kuching started to flood, Noah's ark style. After laying on the street for awhile this nice 200 year old man asked if I was ok and helped me up. I carried my bike to shelter and put the chain and bike tire back on the bike. At this point my wrist was the size of Texas and I had given myself a grease unibrow and soul patch. I swallowed my pride and called the senior couple to pick us up and take us home. We made it and my wrist is fine now. Moral of this story is to follow promptings, or to put the big box on the side of the bike without the brakes. Either can.
Wednesday was sad, Sister Hales packed and we had a lesson and got a new investigator and put her on date. The Plan of Salvation is so powerful. Regardless of how it is taught you can't help but to feel the love God and the savior have for you.
Thursday my new companion came, Sister Leavitt, she is SO COOL. we were in the MTC together and I am legitimately stoked to work with her and learn from her. The day was mostly waiting for her plane to come in and take her grocery shopping.
Friday was Mr. Lim day. Mr. Lim is my kindred spirit, he has been an investigator for a year or so and still doesn't believe in God. We had a killer lesson with him about prayer and God's love for him and then that night we went to Cat's Pyjamas his burger stall. The best burgers ever. We were able to do some major BTR and I feel like he really connected with us and trusts us, which means the next step is progression! :)
Saturday and sunday were good, I accidentally broke the word of wisdom at a potential investigator appointment and I had to repent, but don't worry it all worked out.

This week has been one of miracles and adventures, laughs and cries. This mission is changing me I realized and I can' wait to see what the Lord wants me to do next!

P.S.
so I realized I didn't put the title story in. So missionaries are infamous for burning bridges with members in this branch I have been killing myself to build them. I had finally built one with the relief society president and got an appointment for Tuesday. The day I almost died. We missed the appointment and a bridge was definitely burned. It's under construction currently but I have great faith it will be the next golden gate!

Family and Friends!

This past week has been a whirlwind...I take that back this transfer has been a whirlwind! I can't believe it is half done. It really is true what they say after training ever transfer goes by faster.

So I've tried to keep track of all the interesting things to tell you in my planner in an attempt to be better at writing letters. Now I just need to write a reminder for myself to write in my planner....Haha
I did get a few things written down though! Here goes nothing:

Sister Hales Broken Bike: Haha this is a good one. So P-Days are always the most stressful days, mostly because all the missionaries are trying to squeeze so much out of them and do it all together. Which is cool I like them. But last Monday we went to waterfront which is the super touristy part of Kuching, it's literally a forever long bike ride. We hung out for an hour but then had to hop back on the bike to go grocery shopping, which is another 30 minutes, this time it was even longer though because Sister Hansen got lost for a hot second. (she cut me some slack though...I mean I've only been living in Kuching for 2 weeks....) So after this huge ordeal all day of biking around basically all of Kuching we park our bikes, go grocery shopping, and have to rush so we can get to our appointment on time . Haha. We unchain our bikes and go to pull them out of the rack to go home, and someone had completely detached Sister Hales' tire. Haha literally the most hilarious thing ever! Luckily a very sweet security guard came and fixed it. We had a whole crowd watching the "White People and their broken bikes." We got lots of photos with all the locals. We were celebrities for a hot second. Everything worked out and we made to our appointment. It was a good and much needed laugh!
Almost Dying all week: So i've been having these super weird dreams of dying here in Kuching. (super morbid I know.) I always laugh them off and everything works out, but man this week something was out to get me. On Monday I narrowly escaped 6 cars almost hitting me. Then Tuesday night my light ran out of juice and I had to ride a bike in the dark with no lights....It was super scary. Then on Wednesday it happened. I was hit by my first car! Haha I am 100% ok and all is well. But I finally made it as a biking missionary! I have been extra cautious and safe lately, but the traffic is intense here. I am going to be a pro when I go home though! :)
Unknown Investigator: So remember how last week I contacted a Nigerian man in the mall, well this week was the appointment and I litterally have no clue what this guy's name is. He wrote it in my planner but I can't decipher actual letters. So the whole appointment I avoided addressing him directly and surprisingly it was fine, there was no need for names. He accepted a return appointment and is now an official investigator.....I don't get why I do these things to myself. Luckily we will most likely be passing him to the Elders, because he keeps telling me I was in his dreams...So that's that. Haha the things that happen as a missionary...It's a good thing this is the Lord's Work!
Stella's Birthday Party: On Saturday we were invited to our new investigators Granddaughters birthday party, which is perfect since we needed to pass her to Batu Kawa Sisters, it turned out to be not so perfect. Haha. So we get to the party a little early to give a lesson like Stella asked...we didn't give a lesson...haha we asked to bless the baby, like a legitimate Catholic blessing with Holy Water. We were caught a little off guard but said that we'd be happy to offer a prayer in her behalf instead. As we are preparing to say a prayer all 60ish of the house guests gather around in a big circle and the great grandma starts to bless the baby in Bahasa, then she picks up their water bottle of "Holly" Water, (yes it was mispelt) and sprinkles all of us with it! I legitimately got sprinkled with Holy water.....Then we offer a prayer, in Bahasa and a poor new missionary who was still learning Malay was asked to offer it. Luckily they seemed pleased with it and we went on to eating...and eating...and eating....The whole time we were eating the great grandmother sat by me hugging me and speaking malay, even though I kept telling her I don't speak it. Hahah it was definitely a good memory I'll have here.

This week there were so many fun things that had happened. But more importantly we were able to meet with numerous of our investigators and gauge exactly who is ready to progress and make covenants and who isn't. I've been learning and growing a lot as a missionary here in Kuching and I am very excited to see what weird adventures and lessons Heavenly Father has for me this week. You guys this gospel is amazing. This is the Lord's work and I expect nothing but miracles because of it!

I love all of you!

Selemet Hari Gawail :)

Family and friends:

Wow I am just so bad at the big weekly e-mails so here is my attempt at a real good one!

Monday- We went to a nature reseve here in Kuching and it was really cool, I was able to meet about 90% of the missionaries serving in Sarawak and I can tell I am really going to love the work here. The nature reserve was so cheap too, only 1 RM which is crazy cheap in comparison to what Singapore would charge. It was so beautiful and I am excited for you to see the photos I will send off this week.
Tuesday-District Meeting as usual. Haha my district is just so dorky and nerdy, and I just couldn't help but laugh the whole meeting, but I already love them with my whole heart. Not only did I get district Meeting on Tuesday, but it was like a day of Miracles! We had a lesson with our investigator Shana, with a member present (MIRACLE) then went back to KDC (the chapel) and as we were trying to figure out what in the world we were going to do with the rest of our day that would be more effective than contacting we were able to get an on the fly lesson with another one of our investigators David Ho, (even more of a MIRACLE) and it was a member present as well!! In between our two lessons we were able to meet with the Elders and make a game plan about working with members, and Sister Hales and I made a cigarette box full of "Spiritual Smokes" for our investigator who was having a hard time quitting. Literally such a stellar day.
Wednesday-was pretty uneventful, we went contacting at a mall nearby and I was able to talk with this super cool Nigerian who just moved here to Kuching, we have a lesson this week so I will keep you updated on him. Wednesday night though we were able to meet with a less-active family that lives out in Matang (like a 2 hour bike ride away..we taxied...) and it was SO FUN! we talked about the My Family booklets and geneology with them. Hopefully they feel the urgency to do family history work. They are just so so sweet. After the lesson we were able to play a couple of games with them and it seriously reminded me of Sunday night games at our house. It was a blast. I love working with families and seeing how happy the gospel can make them!
Thursday-Yuck. Weekly planning. It was the pits. But after some super long hours of staring at a white board we got out of the house and went door knocking! Really though, here it should be called gate knocking. It was something I have never done yet on my mission and I did it pretty begrudgingly but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. We met 3 super cool people and I am excited to go back and visit them again. So the rules here in Malaysia are pretty strict concerning talking to Muslims, and we just aren't allowed to talk about religion so when we go knocking we have to be super wary about which houses we hit. The only way to tell if they are Muslim is if they have Christmas lights hung. Sister Hales and I weren't paying attention too well and it was super dark and we rattled the gate and we saw someone start walking out towards us and that's when I saw the lights. Haha instead of being a normal person and just asking where Christians lived, I freaked out and yelled Muslim and ran away. Luckily it was dark so hopefully no one saw my name tag. Haha I am the worst trainer ever.
Friday-3 appointments! I was so proud of us, one of them was practically handed to us! So to meet with Shana we have to bike about 30 minutes away, it's quite the journey, and we had set up a member to go with us, so it was going to be this epic trip. We get to the petronas we usually meet her at and she wasn't there, we waited, and she still wasn't there. We get worried so we call her and she had been stuck at work and completely unable to meet us there. We felt horrible for the member who had to bike with us and wait around in the heat, we were seriously roasting. Instead of being discouraged though our member turned into a killer missionary and said "I think I know where a less active lives around here, let's go and visit him!" In shock we both said of course and by some miracle he was home! Bam, 1st lesson! Then on our way to our bikes from the surprise appointment, Shana calls and says she can meet us at her work place, we were able to high tail it over to her work and have a quick lesson on the GOJC and prayer. Bam, 2nd lesson! After Shana we were able to meet with a potential Stella who brought her entire family to meet with us and get us drinks, it was seriously insane. My spirits were unbelievably lifted on Friday.
Saturday-It rained ALL DAY! our appointment cancelled on us so we went to KDC to plan some lessons, make some object lessons, and talk about our vision for the branch we are in. It seemed unproductive, but it is for the greater good! Afterwards we went contacting at this super cool park that I will have to send photos of next time we go. Honestly so cool.
Sunday-GAWAI!!!!! So apparently Sarawak has this holiday called Gawai, which is basically like New Years for us, but they celebrate like we do Thanksgiving. So all day yester Sister Hales, our Elders, and The Pryzbylas (senior couple), went from kampung to kampung eating ludicrous amounts of food (most of which I couldn't identify...). That's the holiday, that's how they celebrate it. Haha so funny.

Fun Facts:
Weird foods I have eaten on the mission:
  • A bowl of chicken hearts (yes a literal bowl full of chicken hearts....)
  • Chicken/Pork/Duck liver (the WORST)
  • Pig Ear
  • Pig Intestine
  • Chicken Lung
  • Raw Octopus coated in sugar and chilli powder
I don't even know what else, they are just so normal to me now....

Funny story of the week, courtesy of Elder Pryzbyla:
So we were waiting for all the missionaries to show up to KDC for district meeting for forever, so I decided to talk with Elder Pryzbyla about fun things to do in Kuching on P-days, I want adventures while I am here. So he tells me about the Fairy Caves which leads to us talking about fireflies and glow worms. So I asked if it was the actuall bug that glowed or just their poop, ( I know, it's a dumb question but I had heard somewhere that is in actuallity their poop haha). So we laugh about it for a moment and then it gets really really silent between us, because honestly what would you say after that? Then all the sudden he says, "Aren't you so grateful that we don't have glow in the dark pooh." Haha I almost died, then he continues to talk about it and how it'd be helpful for babies and changing diapers. I seriously loved every second of our conversation.

Favorite Moment of the week:
On the long drive back from Kampung it was kind of silent and I get so uncomfortable when no one is talking. So I decided that everyone in the care needed to share their favorite spiritual moment on their mission. It got really quiet and I felt supe lame for suggesting it, and being a complete sister missionary, but then all of the sudden Elder Mitchell started it off. IT WAS SO GREAT! I needed it really bad to hear just how much the Lord's hand is in the work and other peoples spiritual experiences. It doesn't get much better than that. It was so important for me to recall some of those experiences I've had as well.

Basically this week was so so good. I am absolutely loving it here. It is truly so different from Singapore, and there are many moments where I just feel like I have no clue what I am doing, but I know that I am here for a reason and by some crazy stroke of luck Heavenly Father trusts me enough to do this. This is amazing work. I'm obsessed!

Family!

Why have I been so bad at weekly e-mails? I am so sorry!

So quick update on last week:

-MY INVESTIGATOR WAS BAPTIZED. It's was a proud mom moment!
-We had a completely 100% spirit filled lesson that was very very much needed. It's was so cool to recognize it afterwards, that we did nothing, it was just the spirit.
-We taught my 8yr old investigator the GOJC and I made up a little relay race for him with trust falls and obstacle courses, so much fun!
-Pulau Ubin, we did a super intense biking trail, I am actually super proud of myself.

So this actual week let's do this day by day!

Monday: We went to the zoo, well actually the river safari, it was a blast we went with missionaries I don't see too often so it was really good to get to know them. Following our P-day activity we had a dinner appointment with the Bishop of Woodlands ward, my second area and he told the story of how he and his wife met and came to be married...so cute.

Tuesday: a day of meetings for sure. Because we have two areas we are not only in different districts but different zones as well. So at 11 am we went to woodlands ward district meeting till 1230 then immediately following we went to South Zone Meeting for 3rd ward till 430. SO LONG. Zone meeting was really good though which is quite a change for South Zone. We watched this really really good talk by Brad Wilcox called his grace is sufficient, it was given at BYU in 2011 at a devotional. Promise me you will watch it!

Wednesday: We met a LA in my ward who I am just obsessed with. She's perfect. We taught her plan of salvation, it was such a good lesson. That's really it on Wednesday.

Thursday: We taught about the meaning of Easter to a bunch of 3-6 yr olds at a kindergarten one of members works at. It was so much fun, but it made me want a kid way too bad, so I think I will stay away from schools and primary's for awhile...That night we met with a LA in woodlands ward, and he is just a doll, I want to be his bestie, we are reading the BOM together so that I can quiz him every sunday. I think it's really helping him to see that he does understand the scriptures.

Friday: Weekly Planning....gross. Also we have a man living in our apartment complex who we have met with and taught half of the restoration lesson to. Things got weird on Thursday night he asked us if we wanted his house plants because he goes on buisness trips every week complete with insane adventures I will have to tell you about next week. But on Friday we went to his place to pick them up...it just felt so weird and not our purpose. Maybe this is one of those uninteresting you had to be there type of stories...

Saturday: We had a lesson with my 8 yr old investigator, he's so much fun and so ready, we just need his family to get him to church, he wants it so bad! Then we went to Ikea for dinner and ate a ludicrous amount of meat balls and visited some of 3rd ward's members. It was a good day!

Sunday: wow...so much church we went to 3 sacrament meeting had two lessons and two correlation meetings. It was crazy. Then we had to rush to our apartment pick up some games and we went to an appointment with the Assistants. Love them. We played the tie game and pin the angel moroni on the temple (genius right).

This past week was really good. We did a lot of good. I am just falling more and more in love with my ward and Singapore. It's crazy how much exact obedience and diligent scripture study does.

I love you all so so much and I can't wait to skype on mother's day! Will everyone be home for it?

FAMILY!
Wow, so many crazy things have happened this week. Like, insane!

SO on Monday for a post-Zone Conference activity we went a trampoline place, 1st bad idea, Sister Lenhart and I didn't really want to go we knew someone would get hurt and it would most likely be us, but we figured why not, 2nd bad idea. Regardless we show up to the place and Sister Lenhart said that she was just going to take it easy, since she had injured herself not too long ago in a 4 wheeling accident, she didn't take it easy enough, 3 strikes your out. She was jumping around and landed on her knee completely wrong, luckily she got off the trampolines and iced it, but we didn't take the injury as seriously as we should have. After hobbling home, we called Sister Mains to let her know that Sister Lenhart was hurt and she said, just ice it and see how you are in the morning. We agreed and headed to bed. (Side note I had been sick for 2 weeks at this point, my voice was completely gone, so I had downed a bunch of Advil PM.) The next morning I wake up at 8 and my companion had been taken to the hospital at 5 am, she's still there with one of my roommates, getting x-rays and MRIs. Where was I? Completely passed out, such a good adventure. Finally I make it to the hospital just in time for the doctor to break the news that she has to get surgery. Suddenly the words "OFFICE SISTERS" ran through my mind. I was terrified, selfish i know.
After 2 days of sitting at home and everything being up in the air President Mains called and informed her that she would be sent home and released as a missionary, but she would be able to return when all is said and done. I am anxiously awaiting her return. It has to be so hard to go. It really helped me realized that I want to be here, if I had to go home early I'd be a wreck.
So since then I have gotten a new companion Sister Proffit and we are covering 2 areas, this transfer is going to be INSANE. We are so busy all the time. 3rd ward is a pretty bumpin' ward and Woodlands ward is picking up. So we have insane numbers and we will not have a single moment to think about ourselves. It's good I need it. I feel slightly to blame for all the unfortunate events that have happened these past 7 days. After all I was praying for a new area and a new comp, but I didn't want it that badly.
Anyways that's the bulk of what has happened this week. Well that and MY FAVORITE INVESTIGATOR EVER IS GETTING BAPTIZED ON SUNDAY. She had her interview yesterday and she passed, she is honestly perfect and I can't wait for Sunday. I love her more than anything else. Have I told you about her? I am going to now, she threw out her coffee and tea before learning the Word of Wisdom, asked how to donate to the church before we taught her about tithing, and knew the Book of Mormon was true before we explained the restoration. Basically she's a better church member than I am. Honestly that's what this work is all about.
Conference was amazing, so so good. I can't even fit all the insights and things I loved about it on to an e-mail. It truly came at the perfect time and is going to help me to become a better missionary and person now, and a better wife and mother later on in life. There were so many warnings given, it's going to rough times ahead, hands down, but they gave us all the answers, all the keys. One of my favorite quotes from it was "Complexities demand greater simplicity." How true is it, that often the most "complicating" trials in our lives can be solved by the simplest anecdotes, glory in the atonement. WOW. Did that hit you as hard as it hit me. Everything, every talk lead me back to the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Loads can be relieved through it, Gratitude of it brings us everlasting joy, because of it there are no ends only everlasting beginnings, families are strengthened by it. I am sure not all the speakers had the Atonement in mind, but that's how I know I was taught by the spirit, that conference is inspired, and that we have living prophets.
This week has been...i don't even know what to call it, but I am trying to learn to be grateful regardless of circumstances. This mission is meant to be rough. I loved how President Eyring said "Righteousness can't be forced, it must be chosen..." also "if we choose the right blessings will come in time...if blessing were immediate we could not build faith...blessings are delayed for a purpose." That's what I am keeping faith in, that's what we are all doing. We just need to hold on, make Christ the center of our lives, rely on the Atonement, make all the little choices necessary to make it back to Heavenly Father, it's possible we can do it. Don't be casual about the gospel. It's continual.

I love you all.

March 16 2014

I will be out 4 months this week. That is insane to me. Time seems to be at a stand still till I really think that I have been here for 1/3 of a year. Crazy.

This week was packed with lessons. We have really been focusing on the less-actives in our ward and it has been a major blessing for us. One of the sisters we meet with in the ward, is just the sweetest person in the entire world, not only that though but she is a stellar missionary. We had 3 appointments with her in the past 2 weeks and every time she brings a new friend, and makes us lunch.

As many of you know during the mission you get an hour of personal study every morning and I have been devoting my time to really learn who my Heavenly Father is. Who is God to me? It's something I have always kind of struggled with, but never took the time to learn about it. I am still trying to learn more, but as I have focused on that relationship and who he is to me, I have a lot more confidence in who I am and why I am here. This life is seriously rough, sometimes I wonder why we picked to come here and go through what we do, but then I remember who God is. It doesn't seem so crazy to me anymore.

That has been basically all this week. I have been busy as but it's been great.

I love you and miss you all,
Sister Hansen

March 9 2014

This week was slow. In the beginning of the week it was frustrating, all the appointments fell through and we just couldn't think of anything to do. Haha then sadly Sister Lenhart got sick. So we were in for a couple days. But during those couple days I had some of the best moments on my mission. I got a lot of free time to study from the scriptures, and can I just say this church is so true, Joseph Smith is the most amazing person ever and a definite prophet of God. I was able to read all of D&C as well as the Pearl of Great Price and especially Joseph Smith History. I am obsessed with the Restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Obsessed! There is a promise in the beginning of the Book of Mormon that states if you believe in the Book of Mormon you will believe that Jospeh is a Prophet, Jesus Christ is our Savior and basically that all your wildest dreams will come true. THIS IS TRUE. Since I have made scripture study a priority, especially from the Book of Mormon. My testimony is a rock. I teach with the spirit more. I trust in the Lord more. And I know with a doubt in my mind that Christ is my Savior and preformed the Atonement for me.
I can't stress that enough.

One other thing that happened was McDelivery. It's a horrible thing. And I can't believe we did it. If they ever made McDonalds delivery in the states, Haha I couldn't even imagine. Bad things would happen.

Honestly this week was a really good one. Slow but good.

I am starting to be sad about how quickly time is flying out here. The days are slow but the weeks are sooo fast.

Love and miss you all,
Sister Lou

March 2 2014

This week was insane everyone!

It was transfers like I said last week and I have never seen so many miracles in my mission!

First I will tell you about my new companion. Her name is Sister Lenhart, and I am obsessed with her. She is a rockstar. She got into Singapore on Tuesday from KL and this week has been a breeze with her. I was so nervous to get a new companion since this is like my area, I am the one who knows the people and knows how to get places. I was a stress ball. I had no reason to be though, she is honestly stellar and this transfer is going to be amazing, I am stoked.

Haha so I talked about one of my investigators before, his name is Alberto and I love him to death, but he is just a big stress ball...all the time...no matter what. Sister Wynn and I had been struggling to know what to teach him and how to help him out. It was on my mind continuously. So I had talked about him a lot to Sister Lenhart our first couple days together and told her I didn't have a clue what to teach him, and I wasn't even sure if we should continue to teach him. We prayed about it and decided the topic of Faith would be a good one.I mean let's be honest who doesn't need more faith? So we get to his lesson we talk and eat and it's finally time to actually teach him. Well, THE LESSON WAS PERFECT. Everything clicked for him. We read Alma 32 with him, and all the questions he brought up to us before we read from the Book of Mormon were answered while we were reading. It was just crazy and a huge answer to my prayers. Like Sister Lenhart doesn't even know. It's crazy, he's finally progressing, he finally read out loud in front of people from the BOM, and he committed to pray the way we do. Both are GIGANTIC breakthroughs! :) We were on a spiritual high after the lesson.

This week we had our ward activity, the Mini MTC i told you about. How to train members to be missionaries. Something Filipino's don't really need to much help to do, but it never hurts to give a reminder right? It was so much fun. We had a pretty sweet relay organized by the YSA, and 3 other stations, on about how to reactivate members, one about how to pass out a BOM, and the one done by the missionaries, about recognizing windows of opportunity to share the gospel. After the stations President Mains addressed the members and they were all loving it, and the next day in fast and testimony meeting they all bore their testimonies about the activity. It was awesome and exactly what our goal was!

Something even more amazing that happened because of the Activity was that I was able to see one of our ward members Sister Erica. We met with her 3 times (once a week) my first 3 weeks in the field, and I grew super attached to her, I really admire and love her. We had a lesson with her Christmas Eve and then she told us she wanted a break from meeting with the missionaries, we hadn't seen her since, she didn't come to church and wouldn't sms us anymore. I was literally heart-broken. On Saturday though I felt like I should specifically invite her to our ward activity, and she replied! She came and she seemed so happy, much more than before. After the activity we had a dinner and I was able to sit down with her and have a one-on-one talk. It was perfect exactly what I needed and her as well. I was able to know why she didn't want to continue meeting with us and what has been going on the past 2 months in her life. Basically it was another prayer answered. By the end of our conversation we were friends again and now she wants us to come and visit her again! I have never been more happy on my mission. It was my favorite conversation of my entire life and one of the happiest moments as well.

As many of you know I wanted to get transferred pretty bad. Not because I didn't love my ward, but for selfish reasons. I was actually praying to go. When I got news that I was staying, I'm not going to lie I was a little disappointed. But this week I realized the Lord really did answer my prayers, but he just answered my unselfish ones which is so much better! I am so stoked for this upcoming transfer and I know it will be an adventure!

I am so happy and my heart is full this week. I am glad to hear all is well in Arizona and Idaho and with everyone!

Love you and miss you all,
Sister Hansen

P.S.
don't forget the work would be impossible for missionaries if it wasn't for the members. Pray for people to introduce, feed the missionaries, and please pray for them. Trust me it helps!
